What is Astrology?

Astrology is the study of cycles. The sun, moon, and planets move in their own time and in their own space according to individual cycles. Similarly ordained, the earth and all life upon its surface carries forward in complicated, perhaps never-to-be-fully understood, patterns that make up the Grand Design of the cosmos. Some of the greatest thinkers in the history of mankind did not at all think it unreasonable to study planetary cycles in order to gain a better understanding of how mankind in general and people as individuals, fit into the universal cosmos. Human being is nothing but combination of Planet.

What is a Horoscope means?

The actual word 'horoscope' is derived from the Latin combination of two words in which 'Horo' means hour and 'Scope' means view, so it is a 'view of the hour.'

One definition of 'horoscope' is that it is a delineation of particular celestial energies based on heavenly patterns, such as you see in magazines or newspapers.

As astrologers we refer to the horoscope as the astrological chart of a person or a moment in time, which is calculated from the planetary positions in either the sidereal or tropical Zodiac. The calculations used are based on the date, place and time of birth. That's why a horoscope is so personal, like a fingerprint.

When an astrologer works with an accurately-timed chart, the energies carried within it are unique to that individual. Be aware that the chart energies of the planets and signs serve as the potential for personal expression within that individual.

The horoscope holds within it planets, signs, aspects, houses, and other points that reflect potential characteristics and patterns. It is our free will that allows us to work with these patterns or remould them to be expressed in other ways.

Many people think that the horoscope writes our destiny in stone. Not so! It shows potentials...how we use those potentials is our personal prerogative. What the horoscope can offer is insight and awareness about these potentials and their uses.

How does Astrology work?

Because we are created by nature and ruled by nature, natural forces impel and compel our thinking and action. In essence, the material body takes orders from the Cosmic Mind. Astrology and Vedic Science synchronize these events.

Astrology is a religion?

Absolutely not. Nor is it a philosophy. Vedic Science is a natural science

How it helps individual?

It educates you about your present, and prepares you for the future. You learn when and how to take advantage of the auspicious opportunities that come your way; and you learn how to minimize the impact of the less fortunate cycles.

Why birth details like date, time and place of birth is important?

At the date and time of birth, you absorbed certain degrees and properties of cosmic energy. This energy dynamically influences your life.

How can you prove that planets influence us?

Your body consists of approximately 72% water just as the ocean is. The ocean is influenced by the moon, which causes high tides. If the moon can affect such a large body of water then we cannot ignore the moons along with other celestial bodies' power on us. If we get Vitamin D from the sun, we can't filter out the other elements that are also absorbed. If we throw a ball up in the air and then it falls back down, we call that force gravity. Yet, we cannot see it. The same truth applies when magnetic forces bombard our bodies' atoms and influence our thinking and actions.

If it is so good, why doesn't everyone use it?

At the super store one will find Fresh Food and Frozen Food Some will select the more natural product, and others the food with unnecessary additives. It's a matter of choice. Some individuals choose to 'work smarter, not harder.' Also most of Celebrities, Business Man and Politicians they have their personalised Astrologer, but its being private matter it does not known to society.

Why should I go to an astrologer and not a psychic?

Psychic readings can be influenced by a number of things, among them mood, and emotion. Astrology uses a natural science. It is accurate and predictive, without the risk of being influenced by the environment.

I believe in God. Not Astrology.

I do believe more in God then most of you, but I take advantage of this God given knowledge. Why do we go to work? Why do we send our children to school? Why do we go to the doctor? And why do we not close our eyes and drive. Because God wants us to use our efforts and resources to succeed. He created astrology. The planets and human beings are part of His universe. We use Fire, water, air, earth, and all the other resources. Astrology is the most important tool and element in guiding life.

I am educated and I don't believe in Astrology. If I don't see it, I don't believe it.

An 'educated' person might approach this in different ways. One may lock onto a rather shallow set of theories, usually derived from someone else's; or one may realize that penetrating the essence of his or her nature and the universe's may provide a better foundation from which to act. Our practice of Astrology does not purport a fatalistic view of life; it encourages an informed one. It would be a misconception to limit the ancient doctrines as we apply them to contemporary life, to trite rhetoric, or use them to build a case that claims on e is caught in a inescapable pre-designed life condition.

How do I choose an astrologer?

This question is primarily a subjective one, once the client understands the purpose of astrology and the astrologer they can then make a decision based on what they perceive will serve them best. An astrologer can serve in many ways because astrology is the tool that delineates life experiences and life events. It is my view that astrology best serves the client if it offers alternatives that improve the client's life experiences. Because of my conviction that our reality is utterly created by our beliefs and definitions, it is these that I believe need addressing in any consultation.

Where can I find astrologers that are qualified?

There are organizations that test astrologers listed at my links page that can recommend astrologers in your area. There are also qualified astrologers listed at American Federation of Astrologers. Even though they are qualified there are questions you must always ask to satisfy yourself that the astrologer you seek is at your level and has your quality of life enhancement as their first priority. Guru following or advising is a strong clue that the astrologer has not had sufficient training in counsel. It is my recommendation that astrologers be trained at least in undergraduate psychology or counsel to the 300-400 level. Although this is no indication of intent or ability astrologically, it is some indication of the counselor's seriousness about their work. The astrologer must have the ability to refer clients to other professionals (such as clinical psychologists, therapists, business consultants, etc.) because of the high probability of receiving clients with difficulties that require the services of these other professionals.

What can astrology do for me?

Astrology allows us insight into our own personality, motivations, beliefs, and early environmental factors we have internalized that affect our decision making. Astrology can provide insight into how these factors may unfold in probable fashion through future planetary aspects and progressed measurements. It can give us insight into others and therefore increase understanding and depth in our relationships. Please see my astrological definitions FAQ.

Who is right, the sidereal astrologers or tropical astrologers?

These are just two different ways of viewing the same thing in my view. The relative positions of the astronomical bodies really do not change and the Zodiacs can carry meaning for the observer. Astrology is not a hard science and offers many ways to understanding. The key is how the astrologer serves and is able to bring to the client the awareness necessary to aid in their fulfillment and growth. Soon we will require a galactic astrology and that will change the view of astrology completely. Heliocentric astrology is also a valid application of astrology and offers us insight in yet another way.

What information is a real astrological consultation based on?

A real complete astrological consultation is based on time, date and place of birth. Sunsign astrology is an incomplete "popular" notion that generalizes the qualities to such an extent as to make them nebulous and likely to fit anyone. Astrology is NOT what is generally accepted and spun by newspapers and the media etc. based only on Sunsigns, anymore than "Ask Ann Landers" or some newspaper advice column is depth psychology, counseling or professional therapy. Would you base important life decisions on that?

To make sweeping generalizations with sun signs is simplistic and irresponsible. The study of astrology is complex and must be learned like any other discipline. It must be treated with the respect it deserves as a powerful tool of understanding. Tools are always dependent upon the astuteness of the craftsman and their application abilities.

There is one way that sun signs can be used in a positive way. That is by having the horoscope done properly and accurately and then placing the sun on the ascendant with its degree and sign as the ascendant. This is the solar chart. The solar chart can then be read just like a natal and is very revealing as far as implications and interpretations. In this way the solar chart can be used in conjunction with the natal house arrangement and adds powerful information as far as transits etc. as well once an accurate horoscope has been obtained.

There are as many different vibrations as people and even more astrological possibilities. Even twins can express different levels of the same chart, so there is no fixed pattern of anything that makes anyone set as a such and such.

In the same way that a doctor would not make such irresponsible diagnoses based on a persons hair color-so in the same way astrology demands full and cogent renderings based on complete information, and the counselor must be astute and perceptive enough to allow the client to evidence how they have manifested their particular chart.

At least with a solar chart we can still take the natal positions in consideration for a more complete view of the person in question. The astrologer must be diverse and open to viewing the subject in many ways. If astrology is to be treated as a serious subject and valuable paradigm, it must presented and applied it in a coherent and comprehensive way.

When is astrology useful and valid?

Astrology mirrors life. We delineate the life of the individual, subject, issue or event. Whatever is "born" at any moment is really a part of an overall unfoldment called life. Therefore there really are no special times for insight or understanding-which is astrology's best use and benefit. Astrology cannot replace critical thinking, strategic planning, required efforts, or the development of necessary skills to succeed in this world. It will not "give" anyone magic powers, special abilities, "luck" or any other quality that is the product of effort, application of the self or just plain required learning. But it will enhance understanding in what we may need or prefer to create in our lives that brings meaning and purpose to our existence. From that view, it is priceless. When I leave this world all that I may possibly take with me is what's on my mind and in my heart. Astrology can allow us to develop these attributes in a qualitative way-which may very well be the primary purpose for living to begin with.

What is 'the zodiac'?

The zodiac is actually the backdrop to the Sun's apparent pathway through the sky. This pathway is divided into sections that we know as the various zodiac signs. Because the Sun's (apparent) pathway through the heavens is basically constant and can be found at roughly the same spot for the same date in each year, this is how we came to use Sun Signs: the position of the Sun in relation to the backdrop of the zodiac constellations.

This system is convenient because the average person doesn't have to have complicated planetary positions worked out to know which constellation affects them personally, the date of birth is all that is needed in most cases.

All the other planets follow roughly the same path as the Sun, within the zodiac backdrop.

What is a Rising Sign or Ascendant?

The Rising Sign is literally the zodiac sign that is rising on the eastern horizon at the time of birth. This is why the time of birth is important, because without it the Rising Sign cannot be calculated.
  Go Top

What does it mean when a planet is in a sign, i.e., Moon in Aries?

As the planets continue their orbit around the Sun, here on earth their pathway seems to follow the Sun. As they do so, like the Sun they have the zodiac signs as a backdrop behind them. So when an astrologer says that the Moon is in Aries or Mercury is in Virgo this simply means that at a particular time that planet had that particular zodiac sign as it's backdrop.

What is a 'house'?

A birth chart looks a bit like a pie cut into 12 slices. Each of these 'slices' is called a 'house' and can represent various aspects of your life and psychological makeup (depending on the type of interpretation being applied to it). For example, some of the interpretations that can be applied to your second house include: earning capacity, self esteem, values, possessions, 'what I own is what I am', and/or your ability to handle finances.
  Go Top

Why are interpretations by various astrologers so different for the same forecast period?

Just like anybody that you seek advice from, astrologers have different opinions and ways of interpreting the symbolism represented by the planets. The astrologer's training, life experience, and specialisation (ie medical, psychological, spiritual astrology, etc) will all have an effect on the way interpretations are given. I think that it is important to find an astrologer that you feel rapport with because the more open you are, the more you will gain from a personalised forecast.
  Go Top

My friend and I are the same Sun Sign, why are we so different?

When preparing a personalised chart the position of the all the planets are used in determining the psychological makeup of an individual, along with the Sun. The individual planets move at different speeds and will be at various parts of the zodiac backdrop as time moves on. So even if two people are born on the same date with the Sun in the same position, the other planets won't be in the same position. This is important because the position of these other planets will change the interpretation of the birth chart as well as the personalised forecasts.

How does astrology work?

Starting with your birth date, time and location, an astrologer can calculate where the planets fall in your birth chart. A birth chart is a "freeze frame" of the planets at the time of your birth.

A birth chart is divided into 12 houses; each house represents a different aspect of your life. For example, the 5th House is the house of romance, children, and creativity; whereas, the 6th House deals with your work and your diet.

Based on how the planets line up in your houses, an astrologer can tell a lot about you such as your likes, dislikes, motivators and more.

Using what are called transits and progressions, your birth chart will show how your life unfolds. Is everything fated? No, there are many choices to make along the way and Deborah can shine a light on the various paths available to you.

How do the horoscopes that I read in the newspaper or magazines fit into this all?

Strictly speaking, newspaper and magazine Astrology columns do not practice true astrology. They practice "Sun Sign Astrology." Each individual has a completely unique birth chart, and each individual will respond to that chart, in his or her own way because we all have free will and ultimately can determine and choose what we make of our lives. Sun Sign columns look at only one factor in the chart—the sign placement of the Sun. While there is no question that the Sun is very important in the chart, you can only tell the most general things about a person based on their Sun Sign alone, and all of these only relate to how they want to express themselves in a conscious way. Most of us, however, do not use our Sun the majority of the time; most people express their Moon sign far more than they do their Sun Sign.

In order to be able to get a useful understanding of ourselves using astrology, we have to consider all of the different contributing factors. The Sun only represents our conscious sense of self; the Moon is our emotional and feeling nature; Mercury rules the communication and reasoning functions; Venus governs how we relate to others; Mars shows how we defend ourselves, and how we take action based on our desires; Jupiter shows how we seek to grow and expand our understanding of the world; Saturn shows where we need structure and limitations, and how we feel about authority and responsibility. Sun Sign columns are unfortunately how most people perceive astrology. Sun Sign columns are only useful as entertainment. True astrology, however, is a powerful tool for self-knowledge, healing, transformation and spiritual growth.

What is an astrological forecast?

The relationships or aspects between the planets in a Horoscope influence an individual's nature and temperament over a lifetime. In the same way, as the planets appear to cycle or transit across the sky, the aspects they form with the planets in an individual's Horoscope influence day to day life.

Other types of Astrological Forecasts look at the theoretical changes or progression of the birth chart, taking one day to equal one year (e.g. 30 days after you were born = your 30th year of life) and interpret these to gain insight into the major internal changes we experience.

Solar and Lunar Returns take a chart cast for the exact moment that the sun or moon returns to the place that it was in the birth chart, to get a picture of what the next year (Solar Return) or month (Lunar Return) looks like.

When Was Astrology Developed?

Astrology has been often been referred to as the Golden Science, the Mother of all Divination. 'Astro' means Star and 'Logy' refers to Logos or intelligence.

Many archeologists have found evidence of its origins as far back as 4000 BC in the fertile crescent – the cradle of civilization of Mesopotamia, today's modern day Iraq, in the city of Ur at the crossroads of the Tigris and Euphrates rivers.

Both the Egyptians and the Babylonians have been credited with its conception for Western civilization, though it is thought that China and possibly India are the originators of the oldest form of astrology.

The ancients saw their gods and goddesses in the planets and their journeys across the nighttime sky. The astrology of those times was used for predicting weather patterns, outcomes of wars, births, deaths of kings, and other commonplace events that the survival of tribes were dependent upon.

Sumerian cuneiform tablets depict the earliest known writing about astrology. Actually, the astro-archeologists report that it was the Chaldeans who cast the very first birth charts.

With the rise of the Ptolemy, the recording of Eclipses and other celestial events reached a high point somewhere around 750 BCE. Alexander the Great conquered Egypt and brought astrology to Greece.

In the Middle Ages of modern Western history, astrology was forced underground only to re-emerge during the Renaissance. It met with renewed interest and excitement during the 1800s in Europe from British rule in India, which opened doors of curiosity and consciousness.

A major breakthrough came in the 1930s with spiritual advocates such as Madame Blavatsky and Alan Leo breathing new life into astrology, lending it to a more humanistic and personal application – that of expanding one's self-awareness.

We can thank Sydney Omar's writings to bring astrology right to the foreground of modern day practices with the most used icebreaker, "what's your [Sun] Sign?"
